How to frame up a sliding door.
To make the door header the top of the door frame cut two 2x4s to the same length as the width of the original opening and nail them securely together.
This is the actual thickness of a 2x4.
Cut your two sheets of plywood usually available in 4 feet wide by 8 feet long into the exact dimensions of the wood frame which will also be the dimensions of your diy sliding door.
Place the plywood on top of the frame apply wood glue and secure it with screws once it s aligned.
Use shims under screw holes to help keep your threshold in good shape.
Tilt the door into the opening with the bottom side going in first using shims as necessary to create a secure fit.
Attach the plywood sheet to the back of the door.
Apply wood glue on all top surfaces of the pieces of both your inner and outer frames.
Cut the door header.
Place your door hinges and secure them in place with screws.
You will need to add 1 2 of plywood between the 2x4 s to get the right wall thickness of 3 1 2.
Turn the power off in the area where you will be working.
Flip the door so that the newly attached plywood side faces down.
