Installing A Tripod On The Roof

Setting them up is fairly easy just straddle the ridge peak of the roof so the tripod is straight up and level then screw or bolt it down. Predrilling will prevent the lag screws from splitting and cracking the wood. Unfold the tripod legs and loosen pipe support bolts. In order to mount an antenna on your roof without damaging it you should attach the antenna to the gable the fascia or the chimney.

Inserting a short pipe will provide a reference for level and make the tripod easier to handle. With the leg platform firmly pressed onto the roof drill pilot holes in the two outside holes of the leg platform into the roof and rafter using a drill bit about half the diameter of the lag screws. Whatever you do do not put holes in your roof to attach your antenna. Squirt silicon down the hole and around surface replace the tile roof tripod base on the tile and align the screw holes. This is a good solution to prevent leaks. You can also buy non penetrating mounts that use weights rather than screws to hold them in place.

Using some components left over from a former satellite install made converting to an off air antenna rather easy. Place the tripod on the roof peak. Place the tripod on the peak of your roof and screw in the leg bolts like shown in the figure below. Apply silicon to roofing screw holes replace the tripod base and put the roof screws back in place by hand.

Squirt more silicon over the tops of the screws and smooth with your finger. Insert a mast pipe into the tripod and tighten pipe support bolts. Using a drill with a medium torque setting selected drive the screws back in. Pitch pad seals should be installed under the tripod legs.

There are tar pads sometimes called pitch pads that are placed between the tripod feet and the roof that the lag screws go through.
