In a standing seam roof long single panels run vertically all the way from the eave to the ridge.

Next you are ready to install the metal roof.
You are essentially sealing off the metal roof with this flashing and you need to make sure that is securely fastened.
If you want to install steel over asphalt your best choice for installing metal roofing is to use a steel shingle system like the one shown instead of the more common and more expensive standing seam steel.

Snap a vertical chalk line 1 4 inch from the rake edge of the roof using a chalk box.

Be sure the larger edge is laid so that the small edge of the next panel will overlap it.
Ensure that the line is square with the eave.
They need to be about every 2 feet apart.
Install the first metal panel on the low end of the roof square to the eave.
Use your neoprene washer head screws to secure the metal to the sheathing.
Installing metal roofing over existing roofing material can usually be successfully.
For exposed fasteners avoid over tightening the fastener.
Place the first screw.
Make sure that the screws are all aligned evenly as you will be able to see them from the ground if they are.
The eave flashing or edging is just the steel metal strips used to cover the entire perimeter of the roof.
Align the first metal roofing panel so that it overlaps the edging by 1 2 to 3 4 of an inch and is square to the roof.
