Installing Roof Vent Flashing

Center the pipe in the flashing and push the flexible front corners up or down so that the flashing pipe is parallel to the vent pipe.

Roof flashing is standard around any pipe vent. It s soldered to a roof flange that layers into the shingles. The traditional pipe flashing is a soldered lead riser pipe that encloses the vent pipe and folds in the pipe at the top. Cut some membrane material to seal between the vent flashing and the roof and cut an opening for the vent.

Begin by removing the shingles at the affected area and removing old flashing if present. Then nail the new l shaped flashing under the builder s felt but above the fascia board. Pull the old flashing up over the vent pipe and scrape any old caulk and debris off the roof. Apply a thin bead of silicone around the opening of the vent pipe area and lay the membrane in place.

Drip edges are strips of flashing material that run along roof eaves and rakes to prevent water from seeping under the finished roof along its edges. The metal flashing must overlap the material not the other way around. Step flashing on roof peak. Next place your vent flashing on top of the membrane.

These need to be fabricated or ordered to match a specific roof pitch and pipe diameter. Roof shingle over step flashing. If you do not wish to form your own corner flashing you can buy pre bent pieces and cut them to size or use a piece of corrugated aluminum which is easier to bend. However over time the flashing can wear out and allow water to penetrate the interior of your home.

Installing a new pipe vent flashing is easy and can be done in a short time. Bend the corner flashing tightly around the corner. Slide the new flashing over the vent pipe and under the shingles above the pipe. Use roofing nails to install the l shaped flashing flush with the roof and wall then cover it with roofing cement and reattach the roofer s felt.

Next use a reciprocating saw with a rough in blade to cut the out the marked template. After selecting an area to install from inside the building square the template between the roof rafters and outline with a marker. Using a sawzall cut any roofing nails in the area of the lower mounting plate flush with the sheathing. The tools needed are readily available at your local home improvement store.
