Install Bathroom Ventilation Through Roof

You mount a switch in each bathroom.

Install bathroom ventilation through roof.

Apply roofing adhesive on the underside of the flanges to seal. Slide the vent under the shingles so they cover the top half of the vent flange. A grille in each bathroom attaches to ducts which then fasten to a y connector at the fan. From inside the attic drive a nail through the roof directly above the bathroom vent fan.

Climb into the attic and clear away any insulation from around the hole. Nail the lower corners with roofing nails and tar the heads. The 2 pipes one a 4 master and the other a 3 2nd do not go through the ceiling but into a common box that goes through the roof. Center the nail between two rafters.

Draw a mark on the bathroom ceiling where you d like to install the vent fan. I prefer to run a bath vent to outdoors via a horizontal line that goes across an attic and out through a gable end wall or one that vents down and outside through a roof overhang or soffit. The lower half of the flange sits on top of the shingles. This system is quiet too.

Apply a bead of asphalt roof cement on the bottom of the vent. Each bath fan should be on a separate 4 or larger duct and the outside vent portion must have a baffle damper to prevent anything from coming into the duct work. Hot air exhaust vents located at the peak of the roof allow hot air to escape. For optimum performance locate it between the shower and the toilet.

Use an extra long 3 8 inch diameter spade bit to bore a reference hole through the ceiling and into the attic. Install the roof vent install the roof vent by sliding the top flange under the shingles above it and resting the bottom flange on the shingles below.

Secure the vent flanges with roofing nails before installing the shingles.
